What if I can't afford my functional lab recommendations

We totally understand financial constraints when it comes to functional lab orders as many of these companies can be out of network with most insurance companies. Although it may be frustrating to have a test recommended for your care that is financially out of reach here are some helpful ideas to help you continue your treatment plan even if you cannot afford your functional test recommendations.

Tips

  1. Don't automatically assume your insurance will not cover any of your tests. Although it is common for insurance not to cover testing one major functional lab, Genova Diagnostics, is in network with some insurers. We recommend calling your insurance company to see if Genova is in network with your plan and to find out if they will cover your test which may make it financially more feasible to complete your testing. If Genova Diagnostics is in network with your insurance you would need to check with them directly in regards to reimbursement for your test. Also if they are in network with your insurance but the tests recommended to you are not with Genova Diagnostics we recommend that you reach back out to the office to see if there is a similar test that can be done through Genova Diagnostics.
  2. A lot of patient's mistakenly assume that just because they can't afford their functional tests that the treatment journey must end. Functional tests definitely can help to clarify issues and can be extremely beneficial but if it is not feasible for you to afford these tests then our providers will evaluate your traditional bloodwork through a functional lens to develop your treatment plan.
  3. Consider a payment plan for your functional test orders. If you have many test recommendations the costs can really add up. You don't have to pay for all of your labs all at once. Many of the lab partners that we work with allow patients to pay for their test orders over time.
  4. Consider using your FSA or HSA to pay for your lab tests.
  5. If genetic testing (SNP) testing has been recommended for you consider using a service like Ancestry or 23 and me which offers DNA testing typically for a much more affordable price as our office does have the capability of doing a SNP analysis on the raw DNA file that is produced by these companies. Testing with these companies can range from $50-$199 (especially if you catch them on sale!)
