CPT codes for prolonged service

In regards to why you are seeing these codes being billed it has to do with national coding updates.  These prolonged services and service in between visit has always been provided by our doctors however recent coding updates now recognize the significant amount of work that is often provided when the patient is not face to face with a doctor that has been provided without acknowledgement for years.  So these services are now billable to adequately reflect all of the work that is provided to patient both face to face as well as including referrals, care coordination, online services, portal reviews, orders, documentation, etc. that is now required in today's modern medical system.  These codes actually just went into effect in Jan 2021 and our office has been going back and adding the code when applicable and then including it on claims going forward where it was applicable. Our billing department did an update around beginning of May where they were informed about the new codes and then we needed to validate that these were indeed on our contract and billable before we started adding them to patient's claims. So you may see some visits where you have adjusted EOB's as well for any claims adjusted with these CPT codes.
